Reasons To Sing

Have you ever just needed a good reason to sing? The song "Reason to Sing," by All Sons & Daughters is one of my favorite songs because it articulates that deep need to sing for reason that is bigger than any passing emotion. One of the things that set Christians apart from the world, is our ability to sing and praise the Lord even in the midst of our deepest despair. Why? Because time after time, God has shown his sovereignty, faithfulness, and relentless love for his people. The peace that comes with utter faith our God's goodness and all-powerfulness allows us to see past our current circumstances and wretchedness, and praise the Lord with all the more fervor.

With that being said, sometimes you just need a reminder of why it is that we sing. Below are two of my favorite scriptures on this subject.

Psalm 59:16-17 16 But I will sing of your strength;     I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress     and a refuge in the day of my distress. 17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,     for you, O God, are my fortress,     the God who shows me steadfast love.

PSALM 59:16- 17

This psalm was written by David when King Saul sent out his men to kill him out of jealousy (1 Samuel 18 & 19). Even as his enemies relentlessly pursue him, and the odds seem stacked against him, David praises the Lord as his refuge and has faith that He would not forget him in his time of need.

COLOSSIANS 3:15-16

In Paul's letter to the church of Colossae, he articulates that we are called not only to let the words of Christ dwell within us, but to teach and admonish one another with this wisdom and sing with thankfulness to God. He didn’t say, to sing because we're thankful only when things are going the way we want and all our prayers are answered just the way we expected. According to 1 Thessalonians 5: 16- 18, we are called to "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this

is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

When we trust that God is good and faithful the way that David did, we have a reason to be thankful. We can strengthen our faith by learning and remembering how God has demonstrated his faithfulness in the past. God sent his son Jesus Christ down to pay the price of our sins so that we could grow in relationship with Him. That is reason enough to be thankful. That is reason enough to sing.
